2016 Principal's Post March Edition

EVANGELISATION & RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Term One at the Learning Community of St John XXIII has been a very busy time for Religious Education and Evangelisation. Our programs reach across the whole community and encompass social justice, formation for students and staff and the liturgical life of our community. Liturgical Life of the College Our year began with both a ‘Teachers Mass ‘in our parish church and a ‘Commencement Mass for our students, with our Ash Wednesday Mass and Liturgies for the beginning of Lent following very soon thereafter. Each grade has had the opportunity to attend Mass and Reconciliation at least twice this term, during which they are actively involved in reading and offertory procession. The Lenten season concluded with our Holy Week liturgies which occurred right across the College from K -11. Over two days the K-6 community participated in a Guided Prayer Walk based on the key events of Holy Week. Different prayer spaces were visited where the story of the events leading up to Christ’s death and resurrection at Easter were heard. Prayer Life The introduction of the Angelus prayer across the College two years ago has really taken root in our community. A very successful initiative, Year 11 students lead the community in prayer at 12 noon everyday. It is inspiring to see how the entire College pauses to pray together everyday. Each day the children in our College have an experience of prayer. It is through prayer that we become closer to God and can gain strength to live our lives as Christians. Students participate in prayer in a variety of ways both formal and informal. Primary students begin each week with prayer at Monday morning assemblies, each grade having the opportunity to lead the school in a particular focus. It is a great way to celebrate the Catholicity of our school. Another way in which we experience prayer is through Christian Meditation. Each grade participates in Christian Meditation at least once a week, allowing students to reflect on scripture in their own personal way.
