2017 Principal's Post March Edition

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - DR PETERWEBSTER At St John XXIII Catholic Learning Community we believe in the potential of every person and passionately hold high expectations for each of our students. At times in schools we judge the success of an individual student by their grades, NAPLAN results or ATAR. This measure is very superficial and should not be the sole source of assessing a student’s success. The Mitchell Report (2015) states that 26 % (81,000) students across Australia do not complete their HSC each year, yet we continue with the same format that is failing a significant proportion of our students. We need to broaden our perception of achievement. The College is excited to inform our community of several initiatives that will provide multiple pathways for students to achieve and we will be facilitating a number of Parent Information Sessions to clarify the new initiatives. Parent Information Evening.... A Parent Information Evening for Year 8 will be held on Thursday, 4th May 2017 and a Year 10 Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday, 16th May 2017. Both events will be held in the College Hall.

Stage 5.... . The College will be implementing changes to Stage 5 in 2018. These changes aim to personalise the learning for students whilst providing multiple pathways for students to achieve success. The choice of electives in Stage 5 has been significantly increased to allow multiple pathways: Higher School Certificate (HSC); Vocational Education and Training (VET); or an accelerated pathway. Students will have the option the following subject options:- Elective History, PASS, Drama, Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Creative Communication, Industrial Technology Graphics, iSTEM, VET Framework Business Services, VET Framework Construction VET Framework Hospitality, VET Framework Financial Services, VET Fitness, Accelerated Stage 6
